Peter Stampfel and the Ether Frolic Mob
Peter Stampfel was a member of two very influential bands from the 60's and 70's, the Fugs and the Holy Modal Rounders. He recently recorded an album with Baby Gramps another with Jeffrey Lewis and has a large devoted fan base in the northwest, though he very rarely tours up there. We are going out west to record an album with him, J. Lewis, Baby Gramps, Michael Hurley, Sam Shepard (the actor/playwright/old drummer for the Holy Modal Rounders) Robin Remally and other old members of the Rounders. There's a chance some of these guys would join us for the gig as well.
Peter's current band, the Ether Frolic Mob, features a variety of NY musicians, including John Cohen (New Lost City Ramblers) all three members of The Dust Busters and Hubby Jenkins (Carolina Chocolate Drops). They play a mix of originals and songs from the American songbook and folk tradition in a unique balls-to-the-wall style, which is both captivating and transporting. Peter is simultaneously one of the most present and out of this world performers around, and he has safely earned a spot as both a folk legend, and a freak-folk cult figure. He rarely tours in the Northwest but has fans of all age groups who will be very excited that he is doing a show there.
Jeffrey Lewis is a phenomenal song writer and unofficial leader of the Anti-Folk movement. He tours around the US and UK regularly and has a strong if cultish following. He plays old songs, funny covers and writes very poignant, hilarious songs about modern life.
The Dust Busters are a young stringband that is making big waves in the Old Time scene, set to release an album with folk legend John Cohen (the New Lost City Ramblers) in march on the Smithsonian-Folkways as well as a record with Stampfel on Red Newt Records. They have toured the west coast a few times, most recently with Cohen and performed at Pickathon 2 years ago. They are getting ready to record with T Bone Burnett for the upcoming Coen Bros movie, and have share the stage with such varied luminaries as Steve Earle, Patti Smith, Bruce Molsky, and The Foghorn Stringband.
